Though, I think translaiton of it is that I already saw the anime before diving into the novel. The Engllsh series content about 10 books, each book is set within a particularly eccentrically designed mansion, and each of the mansion was built by the same mad architect, who was supposed to be dead in a fire after he murdered his I give Another 3 stars not because I don’t enjoy it, but merely because I had read far better novels by Yukito Ayatsuji than this one.
I just finished auatsuji huge hardcover edition and can confirm that it is BOTH volumes in one. Ayatsuji is one of my most favorite Japanese detective novelists, I love his famous, imaginative ‘Mansions series’ to pieces. It seems like it was an actual 15 year old writing, no distespect to the author though.
I could forgive that to a certain extent, but what I can’t quite bring myself to forgive, neither here nor in the anime, was the one important detail that Ayatsuji artificially hid from readers. But, just talking to you right now about this might be really bad, you know. Misaki is equally interesting, and quite different, being standoffish and mysterious. The afterward to the paperback edition printed at the back of the English edition mentions that the book was originally serialized, which probably accounts for that.
I don’t want to say too much because it will spoil the fun. There are some instances that felt put in for ‘shock’ value that didn’t do anything for me.
However, the story really did find its feet and become very exciting in its second half. When he’s finally able to start school, Koichi soon notices that his classmates and teachers are behaving strangely, but he isn’t able to pinpoint what’s going on.
I do admit that the curse is quite a complex one, and occasionally a little bit of a recap isn’t a bad thing, but it was taken to extremes.
However, there were many things that needed improvement, phrases that came across very awkwardly in English that I know wouldn’t have been so in Japanese. There are elements of culture and events that the non-Japanese person or anime fan will miss unless they spend a bit of time googling, but I didn’t find this enough of an issue to deter me.

For a novel like Another to be a commercial success in a different language you need a skilled and creative translator who can capture the magic of the author’s meaning and imagination and recreate translate or trans-create it in a such a way that it makes sense and is appealing to the buyers in the new market. They don’t give you enough information as they should in a detective novel so that you may solve the mystery as well.
Other books in the series. All I could think was that it felt cool. englieh
It’s been a while since I last saw the anime, but I think it was a fairly faithful adaptation, with the only differences I can recall being a trip to the beach that was entirely invented for the anime and slight differences in the way some students died at the end.
While he initially dismisses hovel of the strange things he hears as small-town superstition, he quickly begins to see that there is something wrong with his class. The summary says the class is haunted by a vengeful spirit but this wasn’t in the anime. Do you want to always remember? Another is a marvelous combination of mystery and horror.
