His style of writing is very emotionally detached and remote, so even though this story was in first person POV, I had no concept of how Oc felt about anything.

From the very beginning, I knew that I was going to have confusio problem with the protagonist. He learns this while avoiding being killed – usually not because of his own wits – and while gradually coming to terms with the realities of the Empire.
